Hi my name is Angela Davis and I am the 4am Quilter. Just to give you a little history about myself and how I got started quilting… we have to look back to 1991 the year before I got married. There was a little shop in our area that sold quilt fabric and supplies as well as other needle arts supplies. I had already been crocheting for a number of years and I wanted to learn how to make a quilt.. this shop had a beginner class that when completed you would end up with a block sampler. Each block teaching a different technique in hand piecing and hand appliqué. I was very excited to learn and by the 7th week my quilt top was finished, basted and ready for hand quilting. Well with the wedding just around the corner, I set it aside to take care of all the last minute wedding preparations and setting up a new apartment for myself and my new husband. Needless to say, that quilt ended up in the shelf in my closet for about 2 years before I finally got it out and finished it.. it has since faded and been mended a few times but it is still a sweet little lap size quilt.
Now let’s jump forward to 1999. It’s a year after my fathers passing and I hadn’t made another quilt since that first quilt and I look back now and think about how I was missing my father and I just needed something to do.. by this time my husband and I were living in Columbus Ohio and there was a quilt shop in our area. I remember walking in and was amazed at the selection of fabrics in all the colors, styles and prints. By the time I left the shop that day I had signed up for a quilt class. This too was a 7 week course but instead of learning to hand quilt and hand piece, this class was all about fast rotary cutting techniques and time saving tips such as chain piecing. When the class was finished, we all had three quilt tops. Log cabin, rail fence and double Irish chain. I left there with my 3 quilt tops ready to be machine quilted and I took off running and I haven’t stopped yet.
Well much has happened since 1999. Jeff and I have three children, two young adults and one still in high school who are all doing well and have bright futures ahead of them.. although their father and I are no longer together, we are still a family and I cherish them dearly.
The 4am Quilter came about first as a YouTube Channel called Quilting In The Basement but I decided to change the name since The 4am Quilter aptly describes my routine much better. I don’t use the basement as my sewing room because I have taken over a spare room in my house and it is highly functional for my quilting and sewing.
So join me on this journey and see where our path leads us.. where I share, care and create with you. After all, why sleep when you can sew!
Yours Truly
